My son is PDD-NOS too for the same reason. He's not classical or Asbpergers. I think you're doing what you should. The more early intervention your child gets, imo, the better he will function when he gets older. My son is already a teen, doing well.

Lisa,

I think you can go ahead and apply for SSI for your daughter. You will probably qualify to get that help for her since you and your son already qualify for similar assistance. We applied but were denied due to my husband's income, but the extra help would have been nice to pay for the ABA therapy and other out of pocket expenses that our insurance doesn't cover. Go ahead and call your local Social Security office and ask them when you could apply- that way you can set up an appointment and get the process started sooner. Good luck!

Lisa,

Saw your post again today and remembered I pm you:)  I hope you are doing well today and finding the answers you need for Abby, don't hesitate to ask for anything:)

I expected my son's dx, too. It still did not make it any easier to hear. In
retrospect, I think I was still hoping for a different answer in my
subconscience, and I got completely flooded with the reality of all I had to
do to get him the support he needed. To make matters more difficult, my
husband and I had just separated and while we heard the dx together,
there
was no one to lean on afterward. He didn't say a word to me...but, I
digress...

I'd say the first thing to do is to take care of yourself, and make sure you
are
supported in this. Take a moment to re-arrange and calm yourself before
you embark on the journey of doing-everything-that-needs-to-be-done.
Like every new phase in parenting, it becomes less daunting (but no more
less exhausting ) with time. You are lucky you have found this
place, there are many thoughtful, loving, and supportive people on this
board.

Her examiner brought up the question was I going to apply for ssi for her. I didnt know you could apply for this. I receive ssdi for me and ssi for my son. would I be allowed to apply for my dd too? And do I have to wait til I get the report back from the examiner or do I start the process now? Its been so long since I did this with my son I dont remember how I even went about doing it. Thank you all again for the support you have all given me with the dx's of my daughter.

We already had her hearing tested were they sedated her and performed the test and everything if A OK. We did this under a year ago.

We already get EI (early intervention) and will be starting wrap around services which will be for now 2 hr a day 5 day a week.

From what the lady at the interview said their is no denying that she definetly has it. She just doesnt fit neatly into one of the regular labels so she would have to be PDD, NOS.

Thank you all for your support through this.

Hi Lisa,

My son was diagnosed at 16 months and although I suspected autism due to my educational background in social work/psych. it was hard to swallow. We took him in and I knew what the diagnoses would be, but I was still sick when he said within 45 mintues of meeting Lucas that he was autistic, PDD. It was very hard to accept- I was notin denial but it was hard none the less.

The BEST thing you can do is cry if you need to and try not to get overwhelmed with all the advice people give you. I do agree to have her hearing tested- that made me feel better to know that was not the issue at hand. Talk with other parents locally who have autisetic children- they are a very valuable resourse. You can then begin early childhood intervention (In TX is called ECI) that is a state funded service that is provided freee or almost free of charge to all autistic children under three. They will help you get resources and help you see what areas need to be addressed.

Please hang in there! Private message me any time- we are all there for you!

Well I am back from my daughters appt with the Autism center it took me awhile to calm down from it all. She was a VERY nice lady much nicer than the guy we had the first time. We werent in the appt 5-10 min when she said she dont know why she wasnt dx'ed with PDD,NOS and that the dx's of Disruptive Behavior Disorder is NOT her dx's. She was teetering on the dx's of PDD,NOS or High Functioning Autism she said its basically the same thing just different term really. I am happy that I got someone to listen to me but I really didnt want to hear it. I know it was that but still in my head I didnt want it to be true I just wanted it to be all in my head and for me to go in there and them to tell me she is just a normal little girl. Now the fun begins bc she is not sure if my insurance will pay for it since i just had a eval done on dec 14th. If they dont I will fight it as I wanted a second opinion. Will let you all know what happens. Where do I go from here? I am lost now, I have spent all my time into trying to get someone to really LOOK at her that I dont know what to do now. Thank you all for all the support you have shown me I really do appritiate it.Lisa -- You are correct that now's the time to hit the road running as far as getting interventions for Abby. However, I would like to point out that 2 is VERY YOUNG. It seems to be especially true for girls that if they get early interventions, by kindergarten many are indistinguishable. Of course, that's certainly not true for all.  Many doctors won't even give an official dx at this young an age because SO much development happens between the ages of 2 and 5.  Sometimes autistic-like symptoms occur in very young children for other reasons.  ONe of the other reasons is hearing loss.  You should definitely get a definitive yes or no about Abby's hearing.  I would suggest a brain stem test, which is an eeg during which they fully test the hearing.  That is not to say that if her hearing is poor, she doesn't have autism. My son got dx'd with moderate hearing loss at 2.5 and has worn hearing aids since before age 3.  However, he also has moderate PDD-NOS.  It's just that it's worth eliminating hearing issues as a cause for some of the autistic symptoms because poor hearing CAN cause autistic-like symptoms -- or exacerbate the autism.  Just another worry for you.
